Because of my job, I spend an awful lot of time online. And I love it. My job gives me so much joy and allows me to live the life I want. However, there are times I utterly hate the Internet (and I don’t use the word hate lightly).
I hate the bullying, the trolling, the fraud it facilitates. I hate the way it makes people compare their own lives to other’s, seemingly, perfect lives and makes them feel bad about it. I hate how it allows groups of unsavoury people to come together to plot bad things. I worry about the affect it will have on my son when he’s older. I worry about most kids online, to be honest.
Well, over the past month or so, my faith in human nature and my love of the Internet has been utterly restored. I’ve seen groups of strangers coming together to do good things. I’ve seen people going out of their way to help strangers. I’ve seen true altruism and kindness. People giving their time to get nothing in return. And this makes me happy. THIS is what the Internet should be used for.
I don’t know how we can reduce or regulate the bad side of online. I’d love the big social networks to create more controls around bullying and trolling. But I know freedom of speech makes this difficult. I’d love to come up with a solution, I’m sure many of you would. But for now, I’ll regulate what I consume.
I’m a big believer in creating your own life experiences. We’re in control of what we watch, read, look at and generally digest. We’re also in control of who we have in our lives and for a long time I’ve only included the stuff that makes me happy. Why the hell would you have anything in your life that doesn’t? Well I’m going to do more of this online, dialling up the good stuff and dialling down the bad. And if anyone has an ideas on how we can beat the bad stuff, I’m all ears.
