In the entrepreneurship space, the topic of resistance comes up again and again.
In this episode of Be the change, I’m joined by psychotherapist and leadership developer Rebecca Ching, to talk about blocks, resistance and self-sabotage and how the best way is not always to power through.
Be the change is a mini-series here on The Simply Smart Business Show where I get down to it with leaders in the online business world to talk about the problems facing our industry today and (most importantly) how we can create the changes we want to see.

Takeaways from this show:
- It feels practical and efficient to suck it up and push through, but that approach is not sustainable. It can do more harm than good.
- When you’re struggling with something, you’ll often hear people say things like “oh, you just have blocks”, or “you just need to let it go”. That creates a lot shame and pressure. It’s not about treating everything with kid gloves, or making excuses, it’s just about understanding your nervous system and feelings, and showing them a gentle respect.
- We need to take a paced approach to resistance – those who push through may see a euphoric high, but ultimately they’ll crash emotionally, relationally and physically.
- Resistance is part of the gig. If you care about something (at all) you’re vulnerable.
- So many leaders feel shame because they”re struggling and that impacts their confidence and self-belief. People numb out, shrink, hide… and this all impacts how they connect, their physical health and also the financial wellbeing of their business.
- We have to get comfortable sitting with others’ resistance as well as our own. That requires a lot of empathy and self-compassion.
