Going left when everyone's going right will help your business stand out

We all talk about the benefits of being different in business (hello – that’s what makes us stand out!). In this episode of The Simply Smart Business Show, I’m sharing an example of how I really went against the GDPR grain and got some great results.

Let’s start off by saying the whole GDPR thing was BORING. It did so much to damage to a whole bunch of businesses, not just because they went around deleting lists willy-nilly, but because they all just sent out generic “please opt back in” emails.

I never wanted to go out with one of those emails. It just didn’t feel right.

I took the time to study what other people were doing – what was working, what wasn’t, and what was nothing short of frustrating. A lot of scaremongering went on, and I didn’t like that.

So want to know how I handled GDPR in my business?

I started by making sure I was actually compliant on my website and in all my different apps and tools.

Then I ran a £1 sale. For four days, I offered four of my things for just £1 (which in case you don’t know, is a massive saving).

I knew from the get-go that this was either a genius idea or a total mess-up, but the important thing for me was to stand out and do something different because that’s what I’m always telling others to do. (Integrity, there you are again!)

I only went out to my list with this because it really was just an exercise in getting them to opt back in and turn themselves into buyers – I have to say it worked phenomenally well. It felt right, it was fun, it was valuable for my subscribers… and I didn’t even need to mention GDPR. Wins all round.

I’ve had such positive feedback and I had lots of people buying. In fact, I only had 45 people unsubscribe from future emailers. That’s a pretty brilliant result, all things considered!

I now have a list of over 50% buyers, which makes it so much easier to engage and sell again. And I’m seeing 48% engagement with my emails, which I’ve never experienced before.

Do you see how not following the herd can lead to some really fantastic results?
