Let’s talk about chasing someone else’s idea of success

As Seen In...

How emotionally connected are you to your goals? Do you want those things because you truly want to see them come to light, or are they on your list because they’re on everyone else’s?

Be the change is a mini-series here on The Simply Smart Business Show where I get down to it with leaders in the online business world to talk about the problems facing our industry today and (most importantly) how we can create the changes we want to see.

In this show, I’m joined by award-winning international coach, Ebonie Allard, and we’re talking:

  • People always chasing the next money milestone
  • Following other people’s standard of success
  • Integrity, authenticity and values
  • Pedestal coaching
  • Vanity metrics

Takeaways from this show:

  • If you follow the “bigger, badder, faster, stronger” crowd it’s easy to think that has to be you too if you want to make a success of yourself, but that’s not true. That’s not good for us. When we force it, we’re doing ourselves a disservice. We’re losing the magic.
  • That feeling of “it’s never going to be enough” is pervasive. But would you rather run a business based on scarcity, or on the values that help you create the freedom and belonging you’re truly craving?
  • Seeing everyone else be so shiny and pretty can make you feel stuck, but you’ve just got to keep your eyes on your own mat. Nobody else has lived your experience – they don’t have your limitations OR your possibilities.
  • Give yourself permission not to follow the leader.
  • Share the true journey. Don’t just celebrate the vanity metrics and shiny wins, share the shit days. The stuff that’s hard. People will learn important lessons from you when you do.
  • So often, we’re outsourcing our pain. We’re not willing to grow up and look at the bits that make us feel uncomfortable – the internal work. You’ve got to learn to like yourself, to understand who you really are, to give yourself permission to go after what you need. It is not about looking for someone else to fix you because you are not broken.
  • Do your work. Be brave. Be courageous.

Take action: Think about one thing that you don’t want your clients to know about you and share it. You could share it with one person – your best friend, your coach, whoever, but tap into that insecurity and say it out loud.
