Let’s talk about being a bully with your marketing

As Seen In...

In this episode of Be the change, we’re talking about bullying in the online space – particularly where you see coaches, consultants and service providers who either bully their customers and community or use bullying in their marketing messages.

Be the change is a mini-series here on The Simply Smart Business Show where I get down to it with leaders in the online business world to talk about the problems facing our industry today and (most importantly) how we can create the changes we want to see.

Takeaways from this show:

  • We’ve all been caught up in this method of marketing where it preys on people’s inadequacies.
  • “Calling people out” simply perpetuates the bullying.
  • When you’re feeling fear, when you’re feeling scarcity which are survival mode feelings which is very natural and normal for a business owner to be feeling but maybe you’re not allowing yourself to feel that way; it gets infused into your marketing. And then you come from a place of desperation. You’ll try any tactic, try any trick. When we come from that energy and those dynamics, we are then a part of this system that is bullying, marginalising and preying on people.
  • When you retarget people with certain messages you’re conditioning them to believe negative things about themselves (or their work). That’s what confuses people, and the confusion is what keeps people stuck.
  • When you’re a small business owner, it’s easy to go down the wrong path. Your growth and development are largely governed by what everybody else thinks you need.
  • A lot of women sign up for programmes when they don’t really know what they need. When they do that, they’re handing their power over to somebody else instead of developing problem-solving skills for themselves.
  • Coaching is designed to help you think better (and more critically). Any coach who is answering questions or dictating information is actually a consultant, an advisor, a mentor.
  • Not everybody is meant to be a business owner.
  • Be helpful, be human, be humble.
