How to BE the expert you are

As Seen In...

I have an exercise I do with my clients. It’s part of my strategy framework and I use it in my Business Success Bootcamp and Masterminds. It’s essential for building self-belief and a credible personal brand.

I call it ‘Creating The Expert’ and it underpins everything. Your content strategy, your marketing activities, what you sell, and so much more. It prepares you for the leader you will become and helps you to connect with the right people.

To truly connect with your people, you need to create your story.
You need to work out how to connect and resonate with them.
You need to create the expert.

There are four elements to this:

  • Your Backstory
  • Your Flaws
  • Your Opinion
  • Your Storylines

This is not a time to be shy, you need to step out and state your claim. Otherwise, you’ll hide in the shadows ‘just getting by’ instead of stepping out and bringing your dreams to life

Your Backstory

This is hugely powerful. People want to know your backstory, they want to see themselves in you. Every character of a movie has a backstory. Every successful expert has one (or two). If you can make your backstory connect with the problem you’re solving and the solution you offer, even better.

E.g. When I was 7 months pregnant, a single mum and jobless, I had to create my own business and make it work. I bootstrapped and worked hard, until I grew this business to a multi-six figure revenue. This helps me to show others how to do the same.

What’s your backstory? Make it as detailed as possible. Do you have more than one? Get them down.

Your Flaws

Nobody is perfect.

People crave authenticity, they want to see your mistakes, your flaws, your vulnerability. It makes you relatable, and makes them see that any flaws can be overcome.

What are your flaws?
How do they relate to your business?
How have you overcome them?

E.g. I once had a huge block around visibility and have been on quite a journey to overcome this. Now look at me! Annoying the hell out of people on livestreams all over planet Internet.

Your Opinions

People connect with people who have strong opinions.

True experts aren’t afraid of sharing theirs, no matter if people disagree with them.

What opinions mean the most to you?

What do you want to be known for?

What do you want to challenge?

Your Storylines

Not to be confused with your backstory, your storylines are various stories and anecdotes from your past that make you relatable and help you to connect with your people.

Things like before and after tales, the hero vs. the evil villains, a secret you want to share.

Personally, I love telling humorous stories of my fuck-ups. They’re highly entertaining.

We all have stories we can tell to help us connect with our fellow humans.

Think about what stories you can tell and jot down a few ideas.

By simply creating content in each of these four areas, you can start to build your expert persona and use it to supercharge your marketing, your content and your brand.

It feels pretty good too.
