Did I ever tell you about the time I was 7 months pregnant and jobless?
It was a few years ago and I was a single mum with no other income. I couldn’t afford to pay my mortgage and I had to move in with a (wonderful, kind and generous) friend.
What was supposed to be the happiest time of my life quickly turned into the scariest.
Now, I wasn’t a complete business novice, thankfully. I’d run a successful business before and knew this was my only option if I wanted to keep a roof over our heads and have the flexibility of being a working mum. So I set to work creating this business I’m working in right now.
It took a month to get my new website live and optimised for search. By the time my son (and my business) was five months old, I was on page one of Google and had my first client. I worked when he slept (my son that is, not my client). I barely slept myself.
I worked out how to bootstrap like a demon, well I needed to keep the income for us and couldn’t afford to invest in the business at that point. I scoured the internet for hacks that would make my life easier. My emotions were riding a roller coaster that I couldn’t get off. BUT I KEPT GOING. I had no other choice.
Three years on I have an amazing partner, we live in our dream home and I have a thriving business that brings in an income that gives us all we need. I feel like the luckiest girl alive. But it doesn’t come down to luck. It comes down to belief, focus, hard work and an attitude that won’t let me fail.
