20 Things I’d Tell My 20 Something Self

As Seen In...

Life is amazing isn’t it? Constantly teaching us lessons that help us to improve and become upgraded versions of ourselves.

I’ve had a wonderful life so far. I’ve laughed, cried, made mistakes and generally done exactly what I want. I feel blessed to be where I am now, with a successful business and a wonderful family. And I’m excited about the future; where my business is heading, the new house we’re buying soon, the little man my boy will become. I’m all about looking forward, the past is where it should be and I’m focusing on now, enjoying each day and putting into place the things that will ensure the best future for us.

But occasionally I look back. I’ve had some sadness in my life, particularly in my childhood, which affected the young woman I was to become. The slightly crazy, spontaneous, fun loving girl that was to become the slightly crazy, spontaneous, fun loving business woman I am now. I wish I could go back and hug her. Tell her to chill out, as everything will be ok.

Instead, I’m going to tell her here (warning, there are swears).

  1. Don’t hide your fragility. Wear it with pride as it’s YOU and you are pretty fucking amazing. Vulnerability is definitely not a weakness.
  2. Don’t start smoking. One day you’ll really, really want to give up and it will be hard work. And it makes your hair stink.
  3. Trust your instinct, it’s bloody amazing. You get so many things right, but you don’t realise this until much later on. It’s there, waiting to be listened to. So listen.
  4. Diets don’t work. Seriously, they don’t. Eat well and look after that body, you’ll need it.
  5. Sweetheart, you have the biggest chip on your shoulder that’s only going to weigh you down. Dig deep, understand what caused it, deal with it and then move on. Life isn’t about dwelling, it’s about forgiving, loving and living.
  6. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks of you. They’re too busy worrying about themselves to care.
  7. Listen to other people’s advice, but trust your instinct. You know what’s right for you. But listen to Laura, she never gave a shit what anyone thought of her. I should have listened to Laura.
  8. Stop worrying about how your body looks. It’s fucking awesome and one day you’ll look back on it with love, gratitude and a bit of yearning.
  9. Don’t regret anything, it’s wasted energy and it’s done. Move on.
  10. Learn to code. Seriously, it will really help you.
  11. Cherish your good friends and remove toxic people from your life much, much sooner. You’ll appreciate it when you go through some tough times.
  12. You can achieve anything. And I mean ANYTHING. The universe is a wonderful thing that wants to give you everything you desire, you just need to ask for it. Open yourself up, dream big and believe it will happen.
  13. Don’t get into cabs alone when you’re pissed. Ever.
  14. Make an effort to keep in touch with the friends that mean the world to you. You’re rubbish at this. You still are now, but you’re working on it.
  15. Learn to save. I mean it. You don’t need another new dress/top/coat.
  16. Don’t get into debt, it will take you YEARS to get out of.
  17. Smile at people on The Tube. In fact smile at people everywhere. It really does light up their day and can lead to some amazing conversations.
  18. Don’t buy the scooter, you’ll have a lot of fun but it nearly kills you.
  19. Break down that wall around your heart, you have a lot of love to give and so much to receive. Yes you will be hurt, but it’s not nearly as scary as you think and you’ve coped with far, far worse. So tear it down and feel free to love with all your being.
  20. Just. Be. You.
